Arctic Sea Ice Melt Impact Extreme Cold

The melting of Arctic sea ice plays an important role behind the cold winter in the UK and other countries in the northern hemisphere.

A BBC report says that researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Beijing, reached their conclusions by studying the model of computer.

"Over the last four seasons, for most of the United States (U.S.) to the north, east Asia and Europe, we see a pile of snow in excess of normal," said Liu.


"We do not see any relationship with any other factors that have been proposed, such as El Nino, but we see that this is associated with sea ice," he added.

Lowest levels in Arctic sea ice was recorded in 2007. Northern hemisphere has recorded the second and third largest snow cover in the last two seasons.

The researchers suggest that atmospheric circulation changes that occur, associated with a reduction in sea ice. This led to increased snowfall in the northern continent.

Besides an increase in water vapor levels in the Arctic, and for the same reason as above, also causing heavy snowfall in Europe and the U.S. during the winter.
