Engineer Develops Laser for Asteroid Twisting

Asteroids are space objects that could hit the planet in the Milky Way galaxy, including planet Earth. Engineers from Strathclyde University in Scotland working to develop innovative techniques using lasers to asteroid deflection or bend.

Research carried out has been found possible to utilize a number of small satellites. The satellite formation in the air and fired together solar-powered lasers to asteroid. This technique is considered much easier than the method that is focused on the spacecraft that are large.

Massimiliano Vasile of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Strathclyde University, who led the research said, "our approach developed will involve sending small satellites that can surround the asteroid, as well as the laser fired from close range."

"The use of high-powered lasers in space for civilian and commercial applications is still an early stage. One key challenge is, high power, efficiency and quality of the beam (laser) who works at the same time." he concluded.

According to Vasile, firing laser beams into the asteroid also has the possibility to cause problems. The reason is, when the laser begins to destroy the object surface, a plume of gas and debris will contaminate the laser.

"However, according to our test lab, membuktikkan contamination levels less than expected and the laser can continue to serve longer," he explained.

Sources said more than 100 years ago there were areas of vegetation covering an area of 2000 km was destroyed when an object is an asteroid which is believed to have a diameter of 30 to 50 meter burst in the sky, in the region of Tunguska, Siberia.Although the possible threat of an attack similar asteroid are low, but recognized preventive measures need to be prepared.

"The main advantage of using our technique is that the laser does not have to be shot from the ground. Although there is monitoring in place to track asteroids, there is no specific system to eliminate it and our study could be the solution." he added.
