Satellites Discover the Melting Ice in Arctic

The experts with the European Space Agency (ESA) said that the satellite was in orbit of the earth began to see signs that indicate permafrost thaw in northern latitudes. These events can be seen from space and show that something bad will happen due to the impact of the thawing permafrost phenomena.

Named Permafrosts, that is permanently frozen soil containing large amounts of organic material that has not fully experienced degenarasi or deterioration. When it melts the frozen ground, this land would release large amounts of substances methane (CH4), which could potentially lead to greenhouse gas (GHK).

Substance CH4 will be 300 times more effective in supporting the greenhouse effect that causes global warming than carbon dioxide (CO2). In addition, these substances are also toxic to human survival. Although rare, the animals roaming the area and exposed Permafrost gas emissions, then the animal will die.

The situation is even worse by the fact that the polar regions are more likely to experience the effects of global warming than the earth's equator (the equator). All Permafrost is located at high latitudes, near the two poles (north and south). The climate scientists say, there needs to be an attempt to avoid the release of CH4 from the source substance.

It is estimated about 50 percent of all organic carbon on the planet trapped in frozen soil. This is a large amount, almost twice as high as that recently discovered. "Climate change impacts are most severe and rapid in the north pole, causing the ice to find," explained a spokesman from the European Space Agency.

"When it (the ice melts) occurs, it releases greenhouse gases into the atmoser. Although permafrost can not be directly measured from space, factors such as surface temperature, land and snow parameters, soil moisture and terrain changes can be captured by satellite. " he concluded.

European Space Agency uses several sarelit to investigate permafrost in the north. Currently researchers are collecting data through satellite monitoring. Sentinel satellite series that used to come a part of the program Global Monitoring for environment and security
